The Health and Wellness Center in Idaho Springs celebrated its one year anniversary of being open on Oct. 31 with a “Halloversary” party.
The center, which has now been a staple for the community for over a year, provides services including STD/STI testing, vaccines, lead testing, wellness exams and more. The center also has a food bank on site where people can take what they need to eat.
Members of the Clear Creek community as well as public officials were present at the anniversary event to celebrate one year of services at the center.
Clear Creek County Commissioner Randy Wheelock explained that the center provides healthcare, both public and private, in a stigma-free way to a rural community.
“We have a holistic way of bringing health to the community at large,” Wheelock said
According to county officials, before the center was completed, the county was without any primary care physicians since 2011. Commissioner George Marlin said that a center like this one provides healthcare to a community that was previously lacking.
“This community got a little easier to live in,” he said about the opening of the center.
The Halloversary event on Oct. 31 was complete with trunk-or-treating and booths from Loaves and Fishes food bank, the Office of Emergency Management and more.
Melissa Lewis, the emergency management coordinator, was excited to meet residents at the event and help them with emergency preparedness.
“We want to set people up for success,” she said. “We plan for everyone’s worst.”
Her booth featured guides on preparedness, as well as necessary survival gear like thermal blankets, whistles, masks — and candy, of course.
Sen. John Hickenlooper visited the Health and Wellness Center back in August. He was instrumental in helping to secure partial funding for the center through a grant from Community Project Funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration.
