‘The world is rapidly taking notice’: Satori Health & Wellness unveils needle-free ketamine therapy – St George News

Usually, ketamine therapy is delivered into a vein or muscle, which requires a needle injection. Most patients tolerate it well, but needles often give patients anxiety, adding stress to the procedure. In February, Satori’s medical director, Dr. Scott Allen, discovered a new method of needle-free ketamine therapy while working with Ryan Bean, a nationally recognized yoga and breathwork instructor.

The procedure involves combining deep, rhythmic breathing with a ketamine lozenge. It doesn’t require an injection and lowers anxiety before and during the procedure. Allen published the results of the first study on ketamine breathwork last month in the Journal of Psychedelic Psychiatry

“My main goal was to find a lower-cost method of delivering ketamine therapy,” he said. “IV ketamine can be labor and cost-intensive, and usually isn’t covered by insurance. But the ketamine lozenges are fairly inexpensive. We have been using lozenges as part of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy for years.”

What Allen discovered, though, is a technique that may change the way ketamine clinics operate.

Satori’s providers were using breathwork as a method to reduce anxiety and improve overall health. When Allen and Bean combined breathwork with ketamine lozenges, they opened the doors to a therapy that not only can be given without a needle but will likely greatly lower the overall cost of ketamine therapy.

Dr. Aaron Vasquez, director of behavioral medicine at St. George Regional Hospital, has observed the early studies of ketamine breathwork.

“It’s fantastic!” he remarked. “It’s another example of a healthy ritual. It lowers anxiety before the procedure, and patients report an experience that’s often better than intravenous ketamine.”

Since February, Satori has been offering ketamine breathwork to patients as well as training providers in the method. This month, they taught a workshop to medical and mental health providers in Salt Lake City, with more workshops planned throughout the country.

“We have providers who want to use the technique in Seattle, California, Idaho and even as far away as South Carolina,” Bean said. “Right now, the only place in the world to find ketamine breathwork is right here in St. George at Satori, but the world is rapidly taking notice.”
